Let's Ponder Some Disturbing Things

Disturbing Thing #1

This is Scabior, the Snatcher from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, as brought to life on screen by actor Nick Moran.  Scabior, we must understand, is a nasty, evil villain in both the book and the movie; the movie ups his creep factor by having him sniff Hermione's hair and generally be threateningly suggestive.  Nick Moran, we must understand, is an empirically attractive actor.

Here's the Disturbing Thing:  People are shipping Scabior and Hermione.

Which just goes to prove (again) if you make it pretty, no matter how Bad it is, people will like it.

Update: Disturbing Thing #1a, to go with Deathly Hallows Part 2

Disturbing Thing #2
Hospitalizations for problems caused by eating disorders grew 18 percent from 1999 to 2006, with the steepest rise among children under age 12 (up 119 percent)
Fabulous!  Great news!  The obesity panic is working!  And it's exciting to see mental health treatment in this country be really prioritized!  Nothing helps someone with a psychological disorder get better like taking away all their treatment options by not reimbursing for them!  Awesome!

You know, I think those are the only Disturbing Things I care to deal with just at the moment.  Carry on.

  1. Scabior issue: EWGH (please note caps).

Eating Disorder issue: I will never forget my daughter at ten, telling me she thought she was fat when looking in the mirror. TEN.

  2. I was just really skeeved by the casting of an attractive actor as Scabior, including making him attractive in an offbeat kind of way (long hair, eyeliner, etc.) and then add the hair-sniffing and other clearly, overtly, threateningly sexualized behavior. That is to say, I am not skeeved that the movie's leaders would make these decisions. I think it's interesting that they did so, in fact. BUT I AM SKEEVED THAT PEOPLE ARE SHIPPING IT. SO SKEEVED.

    1. I totally agree... he is attractive in a badboy-that-your-parents-would-kill-if-they-were-to-find-out-that-you-were-dating-him sort of way. It's the mysterious and and suggestive way that he approaches hermione that makes the audiance's skin crawl-either out of fear or out of excitement- depending on the person.

  3. Him being attractive in the movie is odd to me, because I don't find the actor in real life to be very good looking, and the character of Scabior (in the movie) wouldn't appear to be that attractive either- long straggly hair, and those plaid pants. Yet somehow, combined, it works.

That being said, I don't think there would be shippers if Scabior hadn't been written in the movie to be purposely suggestive to Hermione, something that is not really in the book. From what I understand, there were a few even more forward comments that were filmed and ended up getting cut.

And yes, some of the shippers have gotten a little disturbing with their blogs and fan fiction stories. From what I can tell, 90% want Scabior to indulge in some violent grudge sex (not entirely consensual)with Hermione, about 9% want Scabior to indulge in some hot violent grudge sex with someone other than Hermione (and not entirely consensual either), and the remaining 1% are insisting Scabior is gay.

  5. Somehow Scabior as a character in the movie is hot, Anonymous#1 is right. But Nick Moran is really not attractive. *shakes head* *is confused*

  8. As a child of the '90's, I stand by my assertion that Nick Moran is attractive. For evidence, please see Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels.

Also, a little guyliner never hurt.
