She'd take me shopping for shorts and she'd say things like, "This has got to stop. You're buying a huge size." It continued well into adolescence and beyond. I finally put a stop to it and she hasn't mentioned anything in a while (besides the fact that pregnant women are, according to her, "huge"). I used to be angry about it, but now I just feel bad for her. She's got issues.

Well, until recently. I got really angry with her because she mentioned that my TODDLER who is not even TWO YEARS OLD "eats a lot" and she doesn't want him to become "obese" and be an "overweight kid." WTF? I was enraged and told her if she mentioned my son's weight again and tried to assault his self-esteem like mine was assaulted, I wouldn't let her around him. She shut the hell up.

It's one thing when you're an adult, but you're right. When you're a kid? You can't stand up for yourself.KGhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10236206776336550381noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29046284.post-87730245437395188282009-06-18T22:48:57.694-04:002009-06-18T22:48:57.694-04:00There was a time about a year and a half ago when ...There was a time about a year and a half ago when I was going through a horrible time and I was really struggling with old habits. I lost about six pounds very quickly that I didn't really need to lose. But man, the compliments I got. How dangerous. I know they had no idea what was going on, but I was getting positive reinforcement for doing something I know is harmful and wrong. The Introverthttp://www.jenniferplesko.com/wp-adminnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29046284.post-54123782636431906412009-06-17T15:15:02.612-04:002009-06-17T15:15:02.612-04:00I imagine that most people are just trying to make...I imagine that most people are just trying to make friendly conversation, and/or are paying what they think is a compliment in both the "you're so thin" and the "good work on the diet food!" comments, but that, as I see it, is the whole problem. (As you point out, Yvonne.) It's *that* that must be fought and re-taught at the collective level as much as the more "negative" stuff.Cynical Nymphhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12601814894895238102noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29046284.post-58131520141662182972009-06-17T13:54:54.146-04:002009-06-17T13:54:54.146-04:00Just last night, a grocery store clerk made a comm...Just last night, a grocery store clerk made a comment on some protein bars I was buying. They have the word "thin" in their name, but I get them in spite of that (and I really hate the name) because they meet a bunch of specific dietary needs. This guy felt free to comment on weight saying I was "successful" for some reason. Like my weight was some kind of acheivement. I am totally average weight-wise. When did we get to a point that a woman is never, ever just normal weight? And even if I wasn't, being happy and healthy is the big acheivement, not a particular number on a scale.Yvonne Rathbonehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04614194420076768577noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29046284.post-25892956096340333852009-06-17T13:01:33.003-04:002009-06-17T13:01:33.003-04:00I get told all the time "oh, you're so th...I get told all the time "oh, you're so thin!" and I honestly am caught between replying, "why are you talking about my body, that's creepy" and "you know why i'm so thin? because my blood doesn't work right! bitch."

And don't even get me started on how pregnant women get treated.PersonalFailurehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03034292023591747601noreply@blogger.com
